Bowel injury following gynecological laparoscopic surgery

    Get PDF
Background: Bowel injury remains a serious complication of gynecological laparoscopic surgery. We aimed to review the literature on this topic, combined with personal experiences, so as to give recommendations on how to avoid and manage this complication. Methods: We performed a narrative review on bowel injury following gynecological laparoscopic surgery using PubMed covering prevention, diagnosis, and management. Search terms used were laparoscopy, gynaecology, injury, bowel, prevention, treatment. Results: Important principles of prevention include proper pre-operative evaluation and increased laparoscopic surgical skills and knowledge. High clinical suspicion is crucial for early diagnosis. Diagnostic workup of suspected cases includes serial abdominal examination, measuring inflammatory markers, and performing imaging studies including abdominal ultrasound and CT scan. When bowel injury is recognized during the first laparoscopic procedure then laparoscopic primary suturing could be tried although laparotomy may be needed. When diagnosis is delayed, then laparotomy is the treatment of choice. The role of robotic surgery and three-dimensional laparoscopic gynecological surgery on bowel injury needs to be further assessed. Conclusion: Early recognition of bowel injury is crucial for a favorable clinical outcome. A combined collaboration between gynecologists and general surgeons is important for timely and proper decisions to be made. Keywords: Laparoscopy, gynaecology, injury, bowel, prevention, treatmen

Growth and Characterization of High-Quality GaN Nanowires on PZnO and PGaN by Thermal Evaporation

    Get PDF
In the current research, an easy and inexpensive method is used to synthesize highly crystalline gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires (NWs) on two different substrates [i.e., porous zinc oxide (PZnO) and porous gallium nitride (PGaN)] on Si (111) wafer by thermal evaporation without any catalyst. Microstructural studies by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscope measurements reveal the role of the substrates in the nucleation and alignment of the GaN NWs. Further structural and optical characterizations were performed using high-resolution X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Results indicate that the NWs have a single-crystal hexagonal GaN structure and growth direction in the (0001) plane. The quality and density of GaN NWs grown on different substrates are highly dependent on the lattice mismatch between the NWs and their substrates. Results indicate that NWs grown on PGaN have better quality and higher density compared to NWs on PZnO

Isolation of Fungal Flora in Carpet and Floor Dust Samples As an Indicator of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): A Case Study of a Nigerian Institution

Abstract- Porous surfaces such as carpets have been examined as a possible source for the introduction of indoor particle levels. Indoor airborne mold and/or mycotoxin exposure causes many multi-system adverse human health effects. This study is aimed at isolating and identifying fungal flora in the dust samples of various indoor environments in Usmanu Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, Nigeria. Samples were obtained from six (6) carpeted old buildings, two (2) carpeted new buildings, two (2) uncarpeted old building and two (2) uncarpeted new buildings. Samples were inoculated onto Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) and identified. Ten (10) fungi species from 12 dust samples involving 12 indoor environments were isolated and identified. Total mean microbial concentration was 1.65x10 3 cfu /g, average concentration 1.37x 10 2 cfu/g and standard deviation of 6.73 x 10 1 cfu/g. The isolates include Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Apsergillu

Since independence in 1971 Bangladesh has endured almost 200 disaster events cyclones storm surges floods tornadoes earthquakes droughts and other calamities The cyclone Sidr is the superset cyclone in Bangladesh The study has been conducted at Hizla Upazila in the Barisal district of Bangladesh Natural disasters are increasing day by day according to the opinion of the participants of the study The local government does not act systematically as per government rules Damage and losses assessment was not systematic according to standing orders on disaster The dwellers of the study area continue their livelihoods very miserable after Sidr The farmer lost their all crops and crops value was 45 75 362 dollar The fisherman lost their net fish and boat and their wealth value was 35735 dollar 39 education institution fully and 66 education institution partially were damaged But all sectors cannot recover properly from their losses Some national or international NGO and Bangladesh government provided relief like dry foods seeds fertilizer rice and old clothes etc Relief was not sufficient for the dwellers in the study area The study area has no Disaster Management Committee or no Red Crescent members to recover from the impacts of natural hazards during the disaster perio

Characterization of Artificial Magnetic Conductor, Electromagnetic Band Gap and Frequency Selective Surface

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the characteristics of Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC), Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) and Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) at 5.8 GHz. Reflection magnitude and phase are characterized both AMC and EBG meanwhile, the band gap is specially characterized by the EBG structure. Besides that, transmission and reflection coefficients are used to characterize the FSS structure. Three different flexible substrates are considered which are Fast Film, Arlon AD350 and Rogers RO3010. Then, angular stability is analyzed for each structure. In order to design AMC, EBG and FSS by using thin substrate, the highest dielectric constant is needed to develop a compact structure with the highest bandwidth. Later, AMC, EBG and FSS structures can be used to improve the radiation pattern apart from enhancing the realized gain of a low profile antenna such as dipole antenna

Effect of feeding Lupin (Lupinusangustifolius) on carcass composition of Boer goat

    Get PDF
This study was undertaken to measure the effects of different dietary treatments on carcass composition of Boer goats. The main protein source in the diet was Lupinusangustifolius and other ingredients were palm kernel expeller (PKE), soya bean meal, fish meal, wheat pollard, corn, molasses, crude palm oil, broken rice, and Brachariahumidicola hay. The protein level and energy level in all treatment diet was isocaloric and isonitrogenous (Crude Protein ~ 16.3% and Metabolizable Energy ~ 10.3MJ/kg). The Lupin composition in three treatment diets was 0%, 10% and 30%, respectively. Twenty four Boer goats, age 8-9 months old were used in this study which was divided into three equal groups. The adaptability period was 14 days and the feeding trial goes for 103 days. All goats were slaughtered according to Malaysian Halal Protocol 2009. The results revealed no significant differences (P<0.05) in the initial weight, final weight, weight gain, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight and dressing percentage among the groups. There was also no significant difference on carcass composition: production of lean meat, and bone to fat ratio among the groups. Thus, this study showed that Lupin can be used as an alternative for protein source in goats reared in tropical condition and its performance in term of weight gain and carcass composition is as good as soybean meal

The legal implications of ‘Fatwā Shopping’ in the Islamic finance industry: problems, perceptions and prospects

    Get PDF
This article examines the occurrence and legal implications of ‘fatwā shopping’ in the Islamic finance industry and the need to put the proper legal mechanisms in place to regulate the phenomenon. It provides a case study of the existing legal restrictions in some jurisdictions with a centralised Sharīʿah Supervisory Board at the national level such as in Malaysia. As a preliminary review of the implications of ‘fatwā shopping’ in the industry, this study examines the consequential problems, current perceptions and prospects of such practice. The study finds that instances of ‘fatwā shopping’ are common in cross-border Islamic finance transactions such as cross-border ṣukūk transactions where there is less regulation
